Today we're asking 'What's your favourite essential oil combination for a good night's sleep?'

 

For most people a good night's sleep is essential to functioning well during our waking hours. Sleep or lack of it can depend on a lot of factors ranging from mental stimulation (an overactive mind before bedtime) to something that physically disturbs good sleep (such as sleep apnea).

 

Of course for medical conditions (or if you are pregnant) always consult a professional Naturopath or your doctor. But if you are in good health and need some gentle assistance Essential oils can assist in the process of getting off to sleep.

 

Properties in essential oils have been proven to assist in the process of winding down your waking hours as you transition to those we reserve to recharge our bodies for the new day that follows.

 

When considering what is right for your own situation there are three basic situations to ask yourself, which of these applies to me right now. Here they are:

 

1. Do I need to Relax? In which case Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, Clary Sage, Bergamot and Rose may suit you.

 

2. Do I need something Sedative in nature? For this Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Orange, Benzoin, Neroli and Vetiver are good suggestions.

 

3. Do I need somthing to assist with Insomnia (getting to and staying asleep)? Here Chamomile, Marjoram, Lavender, Mandarin and Orange may help.

 

So it's a combination of what you like as well as what's good for you, and fortunately there's plenty to choose from.

 

It's also important to plan your bedtime, healthy habits include relaxing 'before' you need to sleep. Consider a bath with essential oils, followed by a good book in a comfortable place and burn a combination of oils, and then 15 to 20 minutes before bed put a few drops of your favourite combination on a tissue and gently rub this on either end of your pillow (some like to throw the same tissue under the pillow for good measure!). And then climb into bed having gone through your routine.

 

Change it around as it suits you but a combination of sensibly light activity to wind down, essential oils and comfortable environment makes getting that good night's sleep more likely for you.
